(abc27 – Myles Snyder) A bill that would require litterers to pick up trash has cleared the Pennsylvania Legislature and will go to Gov. Tom Wolf for his signature.
Under Senate Bill 431, a first-time offender would have to pick up litter or illegally dumped trash for between five and 30 hours within six months, in addition to the existing fine of $50 to $300.
Repeat offenders would be required to pick up litter or illegally dumped trash for 30 to 100 hours over one year, in addition to the existing fine of $300 to $1,000.
Existing fines would double when trash is tossed in a litter enforcement corridor, and triple for litter that originated from a commercial business within a litter enforcement corridor. Additionally, drivers would have to yield the right-of-way to any authorized vehicle or pedestrian working along a highway in a litter enforcement corridor.
