The American Lung Association is turning Pennsylvania turquoise to raise awareness of lung cancer and encourage residents to take action to end the disease during Lung Cancer Action Week (May 8-14). It’s estimated that 11,320 Pennsylvanians will be diagnosed in 2023 alone and every day nationally, lung cancer takes the lives of more than 5,720.
“Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths among both women and men in our state, but there is hope. The five-year survival rate has increased by nearly 40% in the past decade thanks to improved early detection of the disease through lung cancer screening and advancements in research, which have resulted in more than 50 new lung cancer treatments approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 2016,” said Caroline Hutchinson, Executive Director of the Lung Association in Pennsylvania.
Lung Cancer Action Week and the Turquoise Takeover celebration unites America to stand together against lung cancer. Each year, the organization turns the nation turquoise, the signature color of LUNG FORCE. Landmarks such as Niagara Falls, NY; One World Trade Center, NY; Times Square, NY; Morrison Bridge, OR; San Deigo Convention Center, CA; and the Mayo Clinic Campus, AZ and many more across the U.S. will shine the light on lung cancer during Lung Cancer Action Week. Here in Pennsylvania, the Lung Association is illuminating major landmarks and buildings turquoise:
Harrisburg/Central and Southwest, PA: Capitol Building in Harrisburg, Lt. Governor Balcony, May 8, 9 and 11 and the Stone Bridge in Johnstown, PA, May 8-14.
Philadelphia: Benjamin Franklin Bridge, May 9; Cira Centre and Garage, May 8; FMC Tower, May 8; Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles, solar wall on May 8; 1900 Market Street, May 8; One and Two Liberty Place, May 8; Pennsylvania Convention Center (Broad Street), May 8; Philadelphia International Airport Tower, May 8; Penn Medicine Pavilion, May 8-11; Two Commerce Square, May 8; Schuylkill Yards (ellipse and Schuylkill Yards sign on Bulletin Building; and Wells Fargo Center, home of the Philadelphia Flyers and 76ers, May 8. The City of Philadelphia has issued a proclamation declaring May 8-14 Lung Cancer Action Week.
