Amtrak has suspended service on its Harrisburg Line today, February 23, 2026, following a tragic incident where an employee was struck and killed by a train.
The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 39-year-old Jeremy Charles of Holtwood, Pennsylvania. According to officials, Charles was working as part of a maintenance crew on the tracks near Greenfield Road in East Lampeter Township when the incident occurred.
Amtrak issued a statement expressing “profound condolences” to the victim’s family and confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances of the accident is underway.
“The safety of our employees and customers remains our top priority. We are cooperating fully with local authorities and the NTSB to determine the cause of this tragedy.” — Amtrak Official Statement.
As a result of the fatality and the subsequent investigation:
Keystone Service: All trains on the route between Harrisburg and Philadelphia are suspended for the remainder of the day.
Pennsylvanian Service: Passengers traveling between Pittsburgh and New York City can expect significant delays or partial cancellations.
Regional Impact: The suspension coincides with a major winter storm currently impacting the Northeast, which had already prompted Amtrak to reduce service between New York and Boston.
Amtrak is currently notifying impacted passengers directly. Travelers are encouraged to check their train status via the Amtrak app or website.
The tracks will remain closed until the Lancaster County Forensic Center and rail investigators complete their on-scene work. It is currently unclear when the Harrisburg Line will be cleared for normal operations.
