Boxing/Self-Defense Fundraiser this Weekend to Benefit Tree of Life Synagogue

By Flora Posteraro

Get on your boxing gloves.  Licensed Professional Boxing Trainer Michael “Mikey Mensch” Cerminaro of Philadelphia will travel to Pittsburgh this weekend to share his expertise and conduct a boxing/self-defense workshop.  It’s Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19 at Crescent Park Pavilion in Summerset at Frick Park.

There are 90-minute training sessions throughout both days.  The first sessions start at 9 am. The cost is $20 to learn boxing techniques and self-defense maneuvers. The sessions will include groups of 10.  Cerminaro will also conduct private training sessions for an additional fee.

Profits from the fundraiser will go to the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill.  Donated items including a set of boxing gloves signed by Yuri Foreman known as “The Boxing Rabbi” will be raffled off on Sunday. Lisa Bruni Shirey is the organizer.  “Michael and I both have friends with ties to the Tree of Life Synagogue and we wanted to help out after the October tragedy. We have received a great outpouring of support in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, even from a boxing club in Ireland”, said Shirey.

October 27, 2018, a gunman entered Tree of Life and opened fire, killing 11 people and wounding 6 more.  There were at least 30 people in the synagogue for services the morning of the shooting. Nearly 7 months later, Tree of Life remains closed.  The mass shooting was the deadliest attack on the Jewish Community in U.S. history.
