The Hampden Township Board of Commissioners has unanimously appointed Jamie B. Keener to fill the Township Commissioner seat left vacant by the passing of long-time Commissioner John V. Thomas.

Commissioner Thomas, who served Hampden Township for nearly five decades,
passed away on March 14, 2025. In accordance with Pennsylvania law, the Board of
Commissioners initiated a transparent and structured process to fill the vacancy. Following a call for interested residents and a thorough review process, the Board selected Keener for his deep commitment to the community and extensive experience in municipal and regional affairs.

“John Thomas was an institution in Hampden Township for nearly 50 years,” said Board
President Nate Silcox. “While no one can fill his shoes, Jamie Keener is already serving on the Good Hope Road Ad Hoc Committee, served on the Hampden Township Zoning Hearing Board for four years, and has served as a Township Supervisor. Furthermore, Jamie has also served in several capacities throughout the region, including the Cumberland York Area Local Defense Group. His past and current involvement in this community made him the ideal choice for this position.”

“Mr. Keener checks all of the boxes,” added Vice Chair Commissioner Sherri Chippo. “As a former municipal supervisor and with substantial experience in planning, he brings exceptional knowledge and perspective to our Board.”

Commissioner Bienstock also expressed support, stating, “Jamie Keener is someone I’ve known for a number of years. He has participated as a volunteer on Hampden Township boards and commissions, as well as similar service for Cumberland County and local athletic organizations. He will be a great asset to our township as a commissioner.”

“Mr. Keener brings a unique professional skillset and experience to serve Hampden Township and its residents,” said Commissioner John Gaspich, Asst. Secretary. “His prior and current participation in numerous township and county boards and advisory groups provides him with the ability to start serving Hampden on day one without the need for an extended learning curve.”
