After a one-year hiatus sparked by safety concerns, the night sky over Riverfront Park will light up once again this Independence Day. Harrisburg City Council has officially approved the return of the city’s Fourth of July fireworks show, breathing new life into a cherished capital tradition just in time for America’s 250th birthday celebration.

The display was canceled in 2025 by Mayor Wanda Williams following a series of public safety scares in prior years. In 2024, the fireworks show was abruptly cut short when a gun scare sent panicked crowds scrambling for safety, leading police to apprehend several individuals, including juveniles carrying firearms. A similar false alarm involving firecrackers caused chaos in 2022.

However, city leaders say they are ready to welcome families back with a renewed emphasis on security.

“Our goal this year is to have a family-friendly, fun, and safe show,” said City Business Administrator Antonio Megna, noting that officials have spent months coordinating with local law enforcement and the Pennsylvania State Police to establish a comprehensive security presence. “We’re going to be ready to handle any and all situations. Please feel free to come out to the event and don’t have to worry about anything.”

The $48,000, 15-minute pyrotechnics display is being produced by Schuylkill County-based Bixler Pyrotechnics, with the entire cost expected to be covered by corporate event sponsors.

The grand finale will cap off Harrisburg’s annual July 4th Food Truck Festival, which runs from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. along Riverfront Park. The festival is slated to feature 40 food trucks, live music, a wine and beer garden, free children’s activities, and a unique petting zoo showcasing miniature Highland cows and goats.

Local officials are highly optimistic about the economic and cultural impact of the event’s return.

“It’s great to have the fireworks back,” said City Councilman Ralph Rodriguez. “It’s always an attraction that brings a lot of people into the city by way of tourism, so it’s always very beneficial.”

The fireworks display is scheduled to launch at 9:15 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early at Riverfront Park to secure a viewing spot and enjoy the day’s festivities safely.
