The family of a 6-year-old boy, Faiz Sharif, who was seriously injured when a minivan crashed into the crowd at the Kipona Festival on Labor Day, has released a statement. Faiz was one of three people struck by the red minivan, which police say was driving at a high rate of speed down a street that was closed for the event.
Faiz suffered a fractured pelvis, lacerated spleen, and a broken jaw, among other injuries, and has already undergone multiple surgeries. In their statement, his family shared their gratitude and requested privacy:
“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of prayers, kind words, and support we have received. Following a horrific incident at the Kipona Festival on Labor Day, Faiz, age 6, sustained a number of serious, life-threatening injuries and has undergone several surgeries. Thanks to God’s grace and the efforts of his medical team, he is now in stable condition. We kindly ask that you continue to keep Faiz in your prayers, and that you allow our family the privacy, time, and space we need as we focus on his recovery.”
Police have identified the driver as Elizabeth Bohrer. According to the affidavit of probable cause, police said Bohrer appeared to be “out of it.” An officer attempting to interview her later at Dauphin County Booking stated that she was “continuously falling asleep or speaking about random things not applicable to this incident.”
Bohrer faces a list of charges including DUI, aggravated assault by vehicle and reckless driving.
