The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is projecting a massive surge in holiday traffic, with an estimated 2.21 million drivers expected to hit the toll road over the upcoming Easter weekend.
Officials are warning motorists to prepare for heavy congestion starting Thursday afternoon. To help ease the flow, the Turnpike will suspend all maintenance and construction work starting at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, ensuring all available lanes remain open through 11 p.m. on Monday, April 6.
Turnpike officials have broken down the expected volume for the four-day holiday period:
Friday, April 3: 615,000 vehicles (Expected heaviest travel day)
Saturday, April 4: 485,000 vehicles
Sunday, April 5 (Easter): 505,000 vehicles
Monday, April 6: 605,000 vehicles
With the high volume of traffic, the Pennsylvania State Police and Turnpike crews will increase patrols to assist disabled motorists and monitor for aggressive driving. April also marks the start of a new toll enforcement initiative. Troopers will be specifically looking for drivers with suspended registrations due to unpaid tolls, which could result in citations or vehicle impoundment.
“Our goal is to provide a safe and efficient travel experience for everyone heading to see family and friends,” the PA Turnpike Commission stated. “We urge everyone to drive responsibly, put away distractions, and adhere to the Move Over Law.”
Traveler Tips
Check Before You Go: Use 511PA.com or the smartphone app for real-time traffic cameras and delay warnings.
Toll Rates: Remember that a 4% toll increase took effect in January 2026. E-ZPass users continue to save nearly 50% compared to “Toll By Plate” rates.
Peak Times: If possible, officials recommend traveling during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening) on Friday and Monday to avoid the heaviest “gridlock” periods.
Maintenance work is scheduled to resume on Tuesday, April 7, as traffic patterns return to normal.
