Pennie officials have announced an extension of the final enrollment deadline for 2026 health insurance. State residents now have until January 31, 2026, to secure a plan through Pennsylvania’s official health insurance marketplace. This extension comes as the state grapples with the expiration of enhanced federal tax credits, which has caused premiums to spike for thousands of families across the Commonwealth.
To ensure a smooth transition and avoid gaps in care, Pennie has outlined the following updated timeline:
Final Enrollment Deadline: January 31, 2026 (Coverage begins March 1).
Current Window: Applications submitted between now and January 15 will typically see coverage begin on February 1.
The extension is more than a simple calendar shift; it is a response to a “sticker shock” crisis. The expiration of enhanced premium tax credits, which were originally expanded during the pandemic, has led to an average premium increase of 102% for many enrollees.
State officials report that approximately 70,000 Pennsylvanians have already dropped their coverage this year due to the rising costs. The extension is intended to give those remaining a final opportunity to work with brokers and assisters to find more affordable, scaled-back options rather than going uninsured entirely.
For those who miss the January 31 final deadline, health insurance will only be available through a “Special Enrollment Period,” triggered by major life events such as losing a job, getting married, or having a baby.
