The funding will support a variety of initiatives, including:
- Reducing Emissions from Livestock: The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will receive $21 million to help dairy farmers implement practices that reduce methane emissions from livestock and manure. This includes, for the first time, funding for the use of innovative feed additives that can lower methane production in cows.
- Promoting Hemp Production: The National Hemp Association will receive $19.6 million to improve conservation practices on 5,000 acres of hemp production in Pennsylvania and other states within the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
- Supporting Climate-Smart Products: Numerous grants will focus on branding, marketing, and promoting climate-smart agricultural products to consumers. For instance, the Rodale Institute will receive funding to help vegetable farmers adopt climate-friendly practices and market their produce accordingly.
- Empowering Underserved Farmers: Over 20 farming and agroforestry organizations will receive funding to expand the use of soil health practices, promote peer-to-peer learning, and develop innovative income streams for underserved and mid-scale farmers who adopt climate-smart practices.
- Developing Sustainable Agroforestry: Lincoln University will receive funds to help build markets for farmers who use climate-smart techniques to produce berries, nuts, flowers, and bioenergy fuel within agroforestry systems that incorporate trees.
- Promoting Low-Carbon Beef: The Pennsylvania Grazing Lands Coalition will participate in a multi-state effort to raise low-carbon beef through sustainable grazing techniques.
This substantial investment in climate-smart agriculture represents a major step towards reducing the environmental impact of Pennsylvania’s agricultural sector.
