Pennsylvania Gas Tax to Increase in 2023

As of January 1, 2023, Pennsylvania’s gas tax is going up.  It’s an automatic increase under state law.

The reason? Act 89 under a 2013 transportation law signed by then-Gov. Tom Corbett triggers the increase because the wholesale price of gas has topped $2.99.  The act mandates the increase to help pay for road and bridge projects.

PennDOT says the gas tax will go up from about 58 cents per gallon to more than 61 cents per gallon and diesel fuel will rise from more than 74 cents per gallon to 78 cents.

Most of the tax proceeds are used to fund infrastructure projects around the state. A portion also goes to Pennsylvania State Police.

While it’s a tax on wholesalers, it often factors into what drivers pay at the pump.  Pennsylvania already has one of the highest gas taxes in the country.
