Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, is phasing out gas-powered leaf blowers following a vote by the township commissioners.

The new ordinance completely prohibits the use of these devices. The ban will be implemented gradually, beginning in 2026 and becoming a complete ban in 2029.

The ordinance cites air and noise pollution, climate change concerns, and quality of life as key reasons for the restriction. Violators will initially receive a warning, followed by escalating fines: $100 for the first offense, $250 for a second within a year, and $600 for a third.

During the public meeting, residents expressed mixed views. Supporters highlighted noise, health, and environmental benefits, while opponents raised concerns about the effectiveness and safety of battery alternatives and managing leaf removal, especially during the fall.
