Primary Election Day in Pennsylvania: Everything You Need to Know

Doors are open and voting machines are humming across the Commonwealth as Pennsylvanians head to the polls for today’s primary election.

Voters across both major parties are casting ballots to shape the political landscape ahead of the November general election. With major nominations on the line—including candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, U.S. House, and state legislative seats—all eyes are once again on this critical battleground state.

If you are planning to make your voice heard today, here is the essential, down-to-the-wire information you need to know before you head out.

  • Polls are open until 8:00 P.M. across the state.

  • As long as you are in line by 8:00 P.M., you are legally entitled to cast your ballot. Do not leave the line if the clock strikes eight.

  • Your polling place may have changed since the last election cycle. You can verify your exact polling location using the official online tool on the Pennsylvania Department of State website.

If you have voted at your current polling place before, you do not need to show identification. However, you must bring an approved form of ID if:

  • This is your first time voting ever.

  • This is your first time voting at this specific polling location (e.g., you recently moved).

If you are holding onto an unreturned mail-in or absentee ballot, do not put it in the mail today. It will not arrive in time and will not be counted.

  • Completed mail-in ballots must be physically received by your county’s board of elections office or placed in an official designated drop box by 8:00 P.M. tonight.

  • If you requested a mail ballot but want to vote in person instead, you can. Bring your entire mail-in ballot packet (including the outer declaration envelope) to your polling place. The poll workers will void it, and you can vote normally on the machine. If you forgot to bring the packet, you will be required to vote via a provisional ballot.
