A dangerous weather system moving through the Mid-Atlantic has placed much of Central Pennsylvania under a Tornado Watch until 7:00 PM tonight, Monday, March 16, 2026. The National Weather Service issued the watch at 11:30 AM as a potent cold front approaches, bringing the threat of intense thunderstorms, damaging wind gusts up to 80 mph, and isolated tornadoes.

In response to the rapidly deteriorating conditions, school districts and government offices across the region have pivoted to emergency schedules to ensure students and staff are home before the most severe weather strikes this afternoon.

Multiple school districts in the Susquehanna Valley and surrounding counties announced early releases. Many schools followed a standard emergency schedule, dismissing high school students as early as 10:40 AM, followed by elementary students shortly after noon.

All after-school athletics, clubs, and evening events have been canceled throughout the region.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania authorized early dismissal for state employees in the Capitol Complex and Harrisburg area, allowing personnel to leave four hours before their normal quitting times.

Meteorologists describe the current setup as a rare “Enhanced Risk” (Level 3 of 5) for Central Pennsylvania. While the day began with unseasonably warm temperatures in the upper 60s, a “weather whiplash” is expected.

“The main concern is damaging straight-line winds, but conditions are favorable for brief, intense ‘spin-up’ tornadoes as the front passes,” warned local forecasters.

Residents should remain weather-aware through the evening. Following the storm front, a dramatic temperature drop of 30 to 40 degrees is forecast, which could turn lingering rain into a burst of snow by tonight.

  • Tornado Watch: In effect until 7:00 PM for 16 counties, including Dauphin, Cumberland, Lancaster, and York.

  • Safety Tip: If a Warning is issued, move immediately to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.
