Dr. David Vaughn, UPMC general surgeon, marked a career milestone today after performing his 2000th robotic surgery at UPMC Lititz. Launched in 2012, the hospital’s robotic surgery program has helped thousands of people in Lancaster County and surrounding areas.
Dr. Vaughn performs hernia repairs, colon surgeries, gallbladder removals and other procedures using robotic arms linked to surgical tools, which are controlled from a console in the same operating room.
“Robotic surgery offers surgeons several advantages, including greater visibility and the ability to utilize multiple instruments at the same time,” said Dr. Vaughn. “This increased precision results in efficient procedures that may be less invasive with faster recovery times for patients.”
Dr. Vaughn originally trained for robotic surgeries while recovering from a shoulder surgery earlier in his career. While using the robot in the months after his surgery, he quickly learned its benefits and now uses it to perform as many of his procedures as possible.
