Gas prices are on the rise and AAA Central Penn reports the spike is a combination of the current conflict in the Middle East and seasonal fuel refinery changes.
Each spring, refineries switch to a more expensive summer-blend gasoline. That change, combined with the impact of the Middle East conflict on global oil and gas supplies, is resulting in higher prices at the pump.
AAA Central Penn recommends these tips to get more mileage from your gas budget:
- Bundle Your Errand Trips – Bundle errands together to accomplish them in one trip, avoiding high traffic times and planning an efficient route prior to getting on the road.
- Plan Station Stops – Look up potential gas stations and prices along your route ahead of time by using the AAA TripTik Travel Planner.
- Perform Regular Maintenance – Keep up with your vehicle’s regular maintenance. This helps ensure optimum fuel efficiency.
- Properly Inflate Your Tires – Keep tires properly inflated. Tires that are low on air reduce fuel economy.
- Follow the Speed Limit – Drive the speed limit. Fuel economy drops significantly at speeds above 50 mph.
- Avoid Idling – Avoid prolonged idling. If your car will be stopped for over a minute, shut off the engine to save fuel.
- Avoid Hard Acceleration – Fast acceleration increases fuel consumption. Instead, accelerate smoothly.
Drivers in the midstate can expect gas prices that are around 30 cents higher than this time last year. As of March 9, the current average in Pennsylvania was $3.59 compared to $3.26 one year ago and just $3.12 a week ago.
