With a mission of “bringing people together with food” and helping to carry on their son’s legacy, the Alex Smith family and their foundation will host Alex’s Chili Cook-Off For A Cause on Saturday, October 2 at Greystone Public House, Harrisburg. Alex worked as a chef apprentice at Greystone before he died in a car accident in 2018.
Foundation President and Alex’s Mom, Terri Smith said, “Alex left us way too soon. Our wonderful son was an energetic and ambitious 22-year-old who attended the HACC culinary program. He was an incredible chef apprentice at Greystone Public House and had such a big heart. He had dreams of opening his own restaurant to share his love of good eats with others, so we created the chili cook-off. He also enjoyed playing sports. That’s why we created The Alex W Smith Foundation, to honor the memory of our amazing son, Alex. Keeping Alex’s memory alive is what keeps us motivated. We are grateful that even in death, his legacy of bringing people together with food is thriving and helping the futures of other students.”
Alex’s Chili Cookoff for a Cause is Saturday, October 2 from 11:30 am to 3 pm at the Geystone Public House, 2120 Colonial Road in Harrisburg. Proceeds from the event will go towards scholarships for high school students in Alex’s memory. Students can request information to apply for scholarships at alexwsmithfoundation.org.
The event includes a sampling of chili from local restaurants in the area and amateur chefs, raffles, door prizes, favors for each attendee, cash bar. As of August 1, participants include Greystone Public House, Devon Seafood & Steak, Houlihan’s Restaurant & Bar, Penn Hotel Sports & Raw Bar, Schmidt’s Sausage, Warwick Hotel, American Culinary Federation, Sysco, Greystone Brew House and Little Essie Mae’s Sweet Shoppe, with more to come.
