ZooAmerica North American Wildlife Park announced with heavy hearts on Tuesday the passing of their cherished cinnamon black bear, Murphy. The bear, known for his gentle spirit and unique light reddish-brown coat, was humanely euthanized following a prolonged battle with significant health complications.

Murphy had reportedly been grappling with major gastrointestinal issues, alongside other complications associated with advanced disease. Despite extensive treatment and exhausting all other veterinary options, the difficult decision was made to alleviate his suffering.

“The absence of our special bear has left a hole in our hearts,” ZooAmerica stated in a social media post, expressing the deep loss felt by the staff. “He was truly one of a kind and will be deeply missed by our team and everyone who witnessed his exceptional personality and gentle spirit.”

Murphy arrived at ZooAmerica in March 2016 from the Montana Fish and Game Commission (F&G). He and his mother were deemed unsuitable for release into the wild after showing too little fear of humans, having been found approaching people’s homes in search of food.

He quickly found a companion in Chief, another black bear just a year older than him. The pair were known to spend their days sharing treats, splashing in the pool, and resting in their cave. Though black bears are typically black, Murphy exhibited the cinnamon color phase, giving his fur a distinctive light reddish-brown hue that made him a favorite among visitors and keepers alike.

The zoo encourages the public to keep their animal care team in their thoughts as they grieve the loss of a treasured resident.
